A centuries old problem in nephtheid taxonomy approached using DNA data (Coelenterata: Alcyonacea) Naturalis
Ofwegen, L.P. van; Groenenberg, D.S.J..
The current centuries old classification of the family Nephtheidae is still mostly based on colony morphology. In this family the Indo-Pacifc genera Litophyton, Nephthea, Dendronephthya and Stereonephthya, and the Atlantic genus Neospongodes form a complex mix of closely related, poorly described species which cannot be recognized using only colony morphology. Attempts with the more modern approach of comparing skeleton composition (sclerites) have been only partly successful because of the extreme variation of sclerite forms present in these genera. The genus Chromonephthea Van Ofwegen, 2005, introduced for several species previously assigned to Dendronephthya, Nephthea and Stereonephthya, was established with sclerite morphology, but the true generic...

A collection of Holothurians in the Leiden Museum from the East Indies and new Guinea, with the description of a new species of Protankyra (Holothurioidea: Synaptidae) from Java Naturalis
Rowe, F.W.E..
Twenty-seven species of holothurian are recorded from the East Indies, including a new species in the synaptid genus Protankyra collected from the central north coast of Java. The majority of the species are widely distributed throughout the Indo-west Pacific region. However, Labidoplax incerta (Ludwig, 1875), known only from Java, is recorded for the second time from the same area.

A crinoid crown from the Wenlock (Silurian) of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Lewis, D.N..
The specific diversity of fossil crinoids from the Much Wenlock Limestone Formation at Dudley, Worcestershire, and in Shropshire differ by an order of magnitude. The latter are relatively depauperate and include only about six nominal species. Over 165 years ago, a specimen from Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, was identified as Cyathocrinites tuberculatus Miller (= the taxocrinid flexible Protaxocrinus tuberculatus (Miller)). This specimen, although indifferently preserved, is distinct from other Silurian crinoids of the British Isles and is described herein as a monobathrid camerate, Macrostylocrinus? jefferiesi sp. nov. This species has a moderately large, conical dorsal cup with at least 20 arms, broad primibrachials, a granular surface sculpture and no ray...

A field guide to the Silurian Echinodermata of the British Isles: Part 1 - Eleutherozoa and Rhombifera Naturalis
Lewis, D.N.; Donovan, S.K.; Crabb, P.; Gladwell, D.J..
The Palaeozoic echinoderms of the British Isles are most diverse in the Silurian and Lower Carboniferous. This guide discusses and illustrates members of all major groups of echinoderms, apart from the crinoids, from the Silurian of these islands. Groups considered include the echinoids (five taxa), ophiuroids (ten taxa) and asteroids (thirteen taxa), and the extinct ophiocistioids (three species) and rhombiferan cystoids (nine species).

A molecularly based phylogeny reconstruction of mushroom corals (Scleractinia: Fungiidae) with taxonomic consequences and evolutionary implications for life history traits Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W..
The phylogenetic relationships of the Fungiidae, a family of predominantly free-living, zooxanthellate, reef corals, were studied by sequencing a part of the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) and the complete ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) I & II of specimens from various locations in the Indo- West Pacific. Some sequences were retrieved by using fungiidspecific primers on DNA-extracts from parasitic gastropods living with these corals. The analyses were performed both including and excluding intraspecific variation to investigate the potential effect of saturation. Even though the present molecular phylogeny reconstructions largely reflect those based on morphological characters, there are some distinct differences. Three major...

A monograph of the freshwater Bryozoa-Phylactolaemata Naturalis
Lacourt, A.W..
1. This paper presents the taxonomy of the Bryozoa Phylactolaemata. The group is found to contain a number of series. The present classification reveals that a number of specific names are synonyms. 2. The evolution of the group is described on the basis of the development of the zoarium and the species-specific statoblasts. 3. The Phylactolaemata are to be considered as a group that have completed their evolution with the development of giant species with giant and specialized forms of statoblasts; this has been accompanied by a reduction in the number of tentacles. 4. The distribution of the species was assessed from the available data. The main concentration is found to occur in the southern hemisphere. 5. The distribution supports the conclusion that...

A new Agelas (Demospongiae: Agelasida: Agelasidae) from the Thousands Islands, West-Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Voogd, N.J. de; Parra-Velandia, F.J.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
Agelas linnaei spec.nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Agelasida: Agelasidae) is described from the Thousands Islands reef complex, West- Java, Indonesia. The new species is compared with all other Agelas species occurring in the Indo-West Pacific region. The new species differs from these other species by the overall morphology and the size of the verticillated acanthostyles. Surprisingly, this is only the second Agelas species ever described from Indonesia.

A new and presumably now extinct species of Millepora (Hydrozoa) in the eastern Pacific Naturalis
Weerdt, W.H. de; Glynn, P.W..
A new species of hydrocoral, Millepora boschmai, is described from the Gulf of Chiriqui, Pacific Panamá. This species was first found in the early 1970's, but it has disappeared from this area as a result of the severe 1982-83 El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. Because the species has never been encountered outside the Gulf of Chiriquí, it is assumed that it was endemic to this area and that its disappearance marks an extinction event, representing the first documented case of a modern extinction of a tropical marine organism due to natural causes.

A new Late Ordovician erratic anthaspidellid sponge (Porifera) originating from Baltica Naturalis
Rhebergen, F..
The new anthaspidellid taxon Brevaspidella dispersa is erected for specimens recovered from the Late Ordovician sponge assemblages of the island of Gotland, Sweden and the Dutch-German border region. In the latter area, they are collected from Early Pleistocene fluvial deposits of the Baltic River System, whereas those from Gotland are part of Late Pleistocene glacial or fluvio-glacial deposits. The provenance of both assemblages is uncertain, but they probably originated from an Ordovician basin in the northern Baltic Sea or the Bothnian Gulf, west of Finland. As yet, Brevaspidella dispersa gen. et sp. nov. is restricted to the Gotland-German-Dutch sponge association and has not been found in the assemblage of nearly-coeval ‘lavender-blue cherts’ and...

A new species of Alertigorgia (Coelenterata: Octocorallia: Anthothelidae) from the Indo Malayan region Naturalis
Ofwegen, L.P. van; Alderslade, P..
A new species of Alertigorgia from Indonesian waters is described and depicted, and compared with the hitherto only described species in the genus, A. orientalis (Ridley, 1884). The species is part of a unique association in which a mollusc species lives on an octocoral, which on its turn lives on a sponge species.

A New Species of Fungia Naturalis
Horst, C.J. van der.
Among the Fungid corals, which Dr. van Oort, the director of the Leyden Museum, has put at my disposal to examine, for which I feel extremely grateful, there were two specimens, which differ so much from all previously recorded forms, that I have no hesitation in describing them as a new species. Fungia moluccensis nov. spec. Corallum oval in shape, heavy; wall with a few slits near the periphery, otherwise solid, aboral surface concave. Margin of the corallum rounded. Upper surface much arched round the axial fossa, at the edge equally thick. Central area of the under surface densely granulated. Ribs only distinct at the periphery, unequal. The larger ones extend farther to the centrum; in the central area they continue for some distance like rows of...

A new species of the Octocorallian genus Paragorgia trawled in Florida waters by R.V. "Gerda" Naturalis
Bayer, F.M..
The genus Paragorgia was established by Milne Edwards & Haime in 1857 to receive the large, boreal scleraxonian octocoral from the "Norwegian Ocean", called Alcyonium arboreum by Linnaeus (1758). In subsequent years, that species was reported also from localities in the northern Pacific Ocean (Kinoshita, 1913; Hickson, 1915) and from high southern latitudes off the Falkland Islands (Broch, 1957). In 1883, Koren & Danielssen described two new species from Batalden, Norway, Paragorgia nodosa and Briareum frielei, which generally have been treated as synonyms of P. arborea. Nutting (1908, 1912), however, reported P. nodosa from deep waters off Hawaii and Japan and, furthermore, established a new Japanese species, Paragorgia regalis. Kinoshita (1913)...

A new sponge Desmapsamma vervoorti spec. nov. (Poecilosclerida: Desmacididae) from Indonesia Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van.
A new poecilosclerid sponge species Desmapsamma vervoorti spec. nov. is described from several Indonesian localities: Ambon, Jedan, Salayar, Komodo, Java, and Irian Jaya. The species was earlier reported from several Indo-Pacific localities as D. anchorata (Carter, 1882), a common Caribbean shallow water species. Comparison with Caribbean specimens makes it clear that Indo-Pacific specimens demonstrate small but consistent differences.

A new Suberites (Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from the tropical Indo-West Pacific Naturalis
Becking, L.E.; Lim, S.C..
In this paper we describe Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from four enclosed anchialine lakes located in Indonesia and from a confined system in Singapore. Initially this species was thought to be specific to anchialine lakes, but further comparison to coastal areas indicated that it is more widespread in inshore systems. We have used morphological characters to distinguish this species and a molecular marker to confirm that all types are the same species. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. is encrusting or massive with small protrusions or larger globular branches. The external colour can be olive-green, blue, purple, red-orange, or orange-yellow. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. differs from known...
